Today's business models are focussed purely on achieving and sustaining shareholder value. What defines success is, paradoxically, the very focus on shareholder value itself.  Shareholder value-focused leaders invest heavily in those things that enable targets to be met quarter by quarter, year by year.  But is that enough? The answer is NO.

Shareholder Value is related to the business performance - what an organization delivers to its stakeholders in financial and operational terms, evaluated through such measures as net operating profit, return on capital employed, total returns to shareholders, net operating costs, and stock turn. Think of Nokia, Blackberry, GM, Lehman Brothers - what happened to them? These organizations created tremendous amount of shareholder value but ultimately lost it. Why? You can be highly profitable but that doesn't mean you are sustainable or responsible and vice versa. We asked how can an organization be profitable, sustainable and responsible simultaneously.

The question led us to create what we call "Four Arms of Value® (FAV)" Business Model. Any organization in any given time must create employee value first to create consumer value which will lead to shareholder value creation and ultimately it must invest in creating social value. FAV gives an organization the ability to create employee value, consumer value, shareholder value and social value simultaneously through alignment, execution, and dynamism to renew itself every time it needs to so that it can sustain exceptional shareholder value creation over time.
